Basic information of the competition
The event is called the FEI Venue Obstacle World Cup - Chinese League and is an important equestrian event under the International Federation of Equestrians. The organizers include the International Equestrian Federation, the Cycling and Fencing Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China, the China Equestrian Association, the China International Cultural Exchange Center, the Beijing Sports Bureau, and the Beijing Sports Federation. The organizers include Huaxia New International Sports and Entertainment (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Beijing Mahui International Equestrian Club Co., Ltd., Beijing Equestrian Association, and Zhongshi Sports and Entertainment Co., Ltd.
The competition is held across different years, usually from March of the previous year to February of the following year. From March 2025 to February 2026 is a complete season, during which the event is divided into two stages: the Grand Prix and the Final. There are two Grand Prix events, classified as CSI Level 2, and one Final event, classified as CSI Level 3. Each city can only apply for one event per season.
The venue is not fixed, and the competition will open nationwide to select cities that meet the conditions as the venue for the event. For example, in 2018, the competition was held in Tianjin and Chengdu, with the final being moved to Chaoyang Park in Beijing. The applicant city must meet a series of conditions, such as having equestrian venues that meet the requirements of the International Equestrian Federation, outdoor venues with an area of not less than 50m x 80m or indoor venues with an area of not less than 40m x 70m, and at least 2 training and warm-up venues, each with an area of not less than 30m x 60m. The applicant city must also have at least 260 competition stables with an inner diameter of not less than 3.5 meters x 3 meters, and must have convenient transportation, meet audience capacity standards, and provide hotel and service guarantees.
Qualification for Participation
Rider's request
Age restriction: Riders participating in World Cup level competitions must be at least 18 years old (calculated on January 1 of the year of the event, for example, in the 2025 competition, riders born in 2007 or earlier meet the age requirement), aiming to ensure that riders have sufficient mental maturity and physical coordination to cope with high-intensity events. The riders of the Hope Star Race must be at least 7 years old (calculated on January 1st of the year of the event), providing young riders with early opportunities to participate in high-level event experiences and cultivating reserve talents for equestrian sports. Riders of other levels of events must be at least 9 years old (calculated based on January 1st of the event year), balancing the relationship between youth participation in the event and safety and skill development.
Registration requirements: Chinese athletes must complete the registration procedures of the General Administration of Sport of China or the Chinese Equestrian Association for the current year, which helps standardize the management of domestic riders and facilitates the organization of events to collect and manage participant information. At the same time, riders must comply with the corresponding event level regulations in the "Implementation Rules for Horseman Grading Management of Equestrian Events" formulated by the Chinese Equestrian Association, to ensure that the rider's competitive level matches the event level. International athletes are registered by the equestrian associations of their respective countries or regions, following the relevant registration process and regulations of the International Federation of Equestrians.
Points threshold (if any): For some high-level events or specific event segments, a rider points threshold may be set. For example, riders participating in the finals need to accumulate a certain amount of points in the sub races. The calculation of points strictly follows the 656 rules of the International Equestrian Federation World Cup, ensuring that only riders who perform well and steadily throughout the season are eligible to participate in the finals, improving the competitive level and viewing experience of the finals.
Horse conditions
Age requirement: Participating horses must be at least 7 years old (calculated from January 1st of the year of the race, such as in the 2025 race, horses born in 2018 or earlier meet the requirements). At this time, the horses' bones and muscles are relatively mature, and they have sufficient physical and competitive abilities to cope with the intensity of the race.
Health certificate: Before participating horses go to the competition area, relevant quarantine procedures must be completed, and a quarantine certificate must be issued by the local county-level veterinary station. When the horses arrive at the competition area, they must be promptly submitted to the organizing unit to prevent the spread of diseases and ensure the health and safety of the racing horses. According to the 2023 edition of the International Horse Federation Veterinary Regulations, horses participating in FEI event levels (such as the World Cup main race level) are required to have their body temperature measured twice a day and upload the FEI HorseApp daily from three days before arrival at the race venue until the event period. Additionally, horses are required to fill out the FEI Horse Health Self Assessment Form to strengthen real-time monitoring of their health status.
Bloodline certificate: Participating horses must hold a horse passport (including FEI ID number) issued by the International Equestrian Federation or a horse passport issued by the Chinese Equestrian Association. These passports record key information such as the horse's bloodline, date of birth, and health records, and are an important basis for confirming the horse's identity and bloodline purity.
Team competition rules (if any)
This competition has a team competition, with a maximum of four athletes per team and a minimum of three athletes per team. In team competitions, the penalty points of the top 3 athletes from the same team with the best performance are added together in each round to determine the team's performance for that round. The results of the first round of the competition are recorded separately, while the second round is ranked based on the sum of the results of the two rounds of the competition. If both teams have the same penalty points and the same time, the time spent by the third athlete in the competition will be compared between the two teams. The team with less time spent will have a higher team ranking; If the results are still the same, compare the match time of the second athlete from both teams, and so on until the team ranking is determined.
Competition events and format
Project Settings
Venue Obstacle Race: This is one of the core events of the competition, which takes place in a specific venue with a minimum area of 2500 square meters. More than ten obstacles with a height of 1.40-1.70 meters will be set up on the competition field, including upright obstacles, double crossbars, double combination obstacles, triple combination obstacles and other types of obstacles. The rider needs to ride the horse and jump over all obstacles in accordance with the prescribed route and sequence. For example, in some competitions, the rider needs to guide the horse to first jump over a single crossbar obstacle, then cross a double crossbar obstacle, and then continuously pass through double and triple combination obstacles, which greatly tests the rider's riding skills and the horse's jumping ability, speed, coordination, etc.
Dressage competition, also known as "equestrian ballet", is a highly artistic and entertaining event. The competition takes place on a flat sandy ground that is 60 meters long and 20 meters wide. The rider wears a black wide brimmed top hat, tailcoat, and high boots, accompanied by a melodious and soothing melody, and cooperates with the horse to complete a series of prescribed movements. These movements include slow steps, brisk steps, running, retreating, transitioning, half reduction, changing arms, sideways steps, diagonal steps, fixed hind limb rotation, etc. For example, in a Grand Prix, the rider needs to accurately complete these movements within the prescribed 12 minutes. The referee will evaluate the accuracy, regularity, coordination between the rider and the horse, compliance, and vitality of the horse based on their movements.
Hope Star Race: As an important platform for discovering and cultivating excellent riders, most of the participants in the Hope Star Race are young riders. All obstacles are set as ground poles, and athletes need to ride horses and complete prescribed movements such as stopping, slow walking, and brisk walking in sequence. The referee will score based on the completion of each movement and the condition of the horse and horse, with a focus on the basic skills of the rider. It is one of the introductory competitions for many riders' equestrian careers.
Detailed Explanation of Competition System
Venue obstacle course: The competition is generally divided into preliminary, semi-final, and final rounds. In the preliminary stage, riders and horses must jump over a series of obstacles in order within the specified time. Violations such as knocking over obstacles, horses refusing to jump, or exceeding the allowed time will result in penalty points. According to the penalty points, the top ranked riders will advance to the semi-finals. The difficulty of the semi-finals may increase, and the height, number, and complexity of obstacles may increase. Similarly, the ranking will be based on penalty points and time to select the riders who will enter the finals. The final is a pinnacle showdown between experts, with more challenging obstacle designs on the field, demanding high comprehensive abilities from both the rider and the horse. The final ranking is determined based on the final results. In some special competition systems, there are also time races that require riders to complete the race as quickly as possible while ensuring that they do not collide with obstacles, and the one with the shortest time wins; Scoring competitions have different scores for each obstacle, and riders can earn corresponding scores by crossing the obstacle. The last obstacle may have a devil obstacle, and successful passing will earn high scores. Failure will result in high scores, and the ranking will be determined by the total points.
Dressage competition: Team competitions include Grand Prix and Grand Prix events, while individual competitions include Grand Prix, Grand Prix events, and Grand Prix freestyle exhibition competitions (optional competitions). Each group consists of three to four pairs of riders/horse racing combinations, and the group score is the sum of the scores of the three best performing riders in the group. All riders must participate in the Grand Prix, and their scores in the Grand Prix will be counted towards both individual and team races. After the Grand Prix, the top six teams advance to the team finals (Grand Prix Special), while the top eight riders advance to the second individual qualifying round (Grand Prix Special). After the Grand Prix event, the top three teams with the best results will receive medals, and the top 18 riders (up to three per National Olympic Committee) will advance to the Grand Prix freestyle exhibition race. The individual champion will be determined based on the Grand Prix freestyle exhibition race results. For example, in a certain competition, the A team ranked first in total score and won the team gold medal with the stable performance of three riders in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special; Rider B won the individual championship in the Grand Prix freestyle exhibition race with his outstanding dance choreography and perfect coordination of horse and horse.
Hope Star Competition: Participants complete the designated movements in sequence, and the referee scores them based on the quality of the movements and the coordination between the team and the horse. For example, in a competition, young rider C achieved a steady and even pace while completing a slow step, and the coordination between the horse and the person was seamless, earning a high score from the referee; During the brisk movement, the young rider D caused confusion in the horse's gait, resulting in deduction of points. The final ranking will be determined based on the overall score.
Competition Rules
General rules
Code of conduct for horses and riders: During the competition, riders must always maintain effective control over the horse and strictly prohibit any violent behavior that may harm the horse, such as excessive whipping, pulling the reins forcefully, etc. At the same time, horses should obey the rider's instructions and actively cooperate to complete the race movements. If the horse repeatedly refuses to jump or intentionally breaks free from the rider's control, which affects the normal progress of the race, the rider may face penalties such as penalty points or even disqualification from the race.
Equipment requirements: Riders must wear helmets that meet the safety standards of the International Horse Federation, and wear professional equestrian clothing, including horse pants, boots, protective vests, etc., to ensure their own safety and dress appropriately during the competition. The equipment of the horse, such as saddle, stirrup, horse rank, etc., must also comply with the provisions of the International Equestrian Federation to ensure that it is suitable for the shape of the horse, will not cause discomfort or injury to the horse, and the equipment must not fall off or be damaged during the race.
Competition time limit: Each competition event has a clear time limit. For example, in field obstacle races, riders need to complete the race route within a specified time. If they exceed the time limit, they will be penalized with points according to certain rules, such as 1 point for every second they exceed. Dressage competitions also specify the time frame for completing the entire set of movements. If the required movements are completed within 12 minutes, exceeding or falling short of the specified time frame may result in deduction of points.
Violation and Penalties: In addition to the penalty points for exceeding the time limit and abnormal behavior of horses mentioned above, there are also corresponding penalties for situations such as hitting obstacle poles, horses refusing to jump, and riders falling off their horses. Falling an obstacle pole in a field obstacle race usually results in a penalty of 4 points, a horse refusing to jump once results in a penalty of 4 points, and a rider falling off a horse directly results in a penalty of 8 points. If it is found during the competition that the rider or horse has engaged in serious violations of sports ethics and competition rules such as illegal use of drugs or cheating, their qualification for the competition will be immediately cancelled, and further penalties such as suspension will be imposed according to the severity of the circumstances.
Exclusive rules for each project
Obstacle racing on the field: The race route is designed in advance by a route designer certified by the International Horse Federation, and riders must strictly jump over obstacles in accordance with the prescribed route sequence. The height, width, and difficulty of obstacles may vary depending on the level of the competition. For World Cup level events, obstacles can reach a height of 1.40-1.50 meters and a width of 1.50-1.70 meters (with a three crossbar width of 2.00 meters). In some special competition systems, such as race time, the rider wins with the shortest race time without penalty points; The scoring competition is where each obstacle has a different score, and the last obstacle always has a devil obstacle. Successful passing earns high scores, while failure deducts high scores, and the total score determines the ranking.
Dressage competition: There are strict standards and sequence requirements for the competition movements. Riders are required to complete a series of movements in the designated area (60 meters long and 20 meters wide) in the prescribed order, including slow step, brisk step, running, backward step, conversion, half reduction, change of inner arms, lateral step, diagonal step, fixed hind leg rotation, etc. Each action judge will rate it on a scale of 0-10 based on its accuracy, regularity, coordination between the horse and horse, compliance, and vitality. For example, in a competition, rider A achieved a high score of 8 points by accurately rotating the horse's hind legs, maintaining stable steps, and coordinating the horse and horse in a coordinated manner; However, when rider B made a diagonal step, the horse's pace became chaotic and only received 4 points. In team competitions, the team score is the total score of the top three riders in the team.
Hope Star Competition: Participants are required to complete stopping, slow walking, brisk walking, and other movements in sequence according to regulations. The referee focuses on the basic handling ability of the horse, the standardization of movements, and the level of coordination between the horse and horse. For example, in slow paced movements, it is required that the horse steps evenly and steadily, the rider sits upright, and the auxiliary instructions through the reins and legs are clear, in order to evaluate the score.

Special awards
The Knight's Golden Whip Award is established to recognize coaches who have made outstanding contributions in the field of equestrian education and have trained numerous outstanding riders. The selection criteria mainly refer to the achievements of riders trained by coaches in major domestic and international events, such as the awards won in events organized by the International Horse Federation and high-level equestrian events in China. At the same time, it will also examine whether the coach's teaching philosophy and methods are innovative and scientific, as well as their reputation and influence in the industry. For example, a coach who has trained multiple riders who have won medals in international equestrian events, with a unique teaching method that emphasizes individualized instruction, has gained unanimous recognition from peers and students, and has the potential to win the award.
The Best Horse Style Award: aims to reward horses that exhibit the best physique, temperament, and competitive state in competitions. When selecting, factors such as the horse's jumping posture during the race (such as jumping height, span, and smoothness of movements), running speed, endurance, and the spirit displayed on the track (such as high fighting spirit and focus on the race) will be comprehensively considered. For example, a horse that jumps lightly and agilely in a track obstacle race, and maintains vigorous energy throughout the entire race, has the ability to compete for the award.
Fair Competition Award: This award is established to promote the sportsmanship of fair competition, encourage riders and teams to abide by the rules, respect opponents and referees in the competition. The selection criteria include no violations during the competition (such as not using illegal drugs, not intentionally interfering with other players' matches), respect for the referee's decisions (no inappropriate behavior such as protests or arguments), and good sportsmanship demonstrated during the competition (such as actively helping injured opponents, congratulating opponents after the competition). For example, if a rider strictly abides by the rules throughout the competition, even if they have objections to the referee's decision, they can communicate and resolve them through reasonable channels, and help other athletes who encounter difficulties multiple times during the competition, they may win the award.
